Ruth Lewis is one half of the kick ass fitness motivators known as Weird Girls Fitness (@weirdgirlsfitness). As a budding fitness guru, independent entrepreneur and political science student she serves us regular fitness and health tips through social media with informative and fun work out posts and videos.
GWG caught up with Ruth to talk about tips, trips and lots more.
GWG: What has been your biggest challenge as an independent entrepreneur, budding fitness guru and student?
Ruth: I’m studying political science, and I sometimes struggle with thinking “does this fitness stuff even matter?”-because I’m constantly learning about huge issues that affect people around the world. But I think fitness does matter. Every human deserves to feel good about themselves, and fitness can be really empowering.
GWG: What started the “fitness bug” so to speak inside of you?
Ruth: I was definitely not born an athlete. I'm not embarrassed to say that I struggled with an eating disorder in my late teens and early twenties. I came to fitness because I knew I couldn't keep treating myself so poorly. I joined a gym 11 years ago, and it's been an uphill journey since then. When I started, I never imagined I could love my body as much as I do now- both for the way it looks and for its’ capabilities.
GWG: How do you stay motivate to eat well and train hard without slipping?
Ruth: My motivation changes all the time- it’s often based on upcoming events, like a vacation or my upcoming 30th birthday. But overall I just know from experience that I feel so much better when I am eating well and working out regularly. Also, I genuinely love working out.
GWG: How did Weird Girls Fitness start?
Ruth: Tanisha White (my friend and co-founder of Weird Girls)and I had talked about doing some sort of fitness related project for a while. But I think we just didn't feel like the timing was right- we’re both really busy. It got to a point though where we both felt something was missing from our lives. We knew this was a huge passion that we wanted to pursue in some way and we figured, why not just start…the time might never be perfect! We chose to begin with Instagram because it really doesn't require much extra time commitment- it is more about documenting what we were already doing. We called it Weird Girls to convey our shared belief that you don't need to fit into any ideal to love fitness.
GWG: If you a personal motto for yourself and also for your fitness brand what would it be?
Ruth: We want to approach fitness in way that is inclusive, supportive, and positive. We also want to make sure that we include mental health as an important aspect to overall fitness…something that sums that up simply. “Move your body. Love yourself”
